Using RegEx to Map Words and Phrases to Slots

Slot

The word “slot” has a variety of definitions, including a wide, flat wooden bar, an opening or perforation, an aperture, or any combination of these. A slot is used in many applications, from the literal sense of “hollow space” to its use in a metaphor. In modern usage, the word “slot” refers to an interior opening in a copy desk, where the chief copy editor is assigned to a particular assignment. A slot is also used to describe a position within an organization, such as a Gazette. Likewise, a slot can describe an airplane’s authorization to land and take off, or is a position authorized by an airport or air-traffic authority.

A slot is a great area for a defensive player to take a shot. Goalies must be on their toes to stop a slap shot that is over 100 mph. In addition, a center or winger can place his stick out in front of the goalie to redirect a shot. One of the most iconic shots in the sport is a well-placed one-timer from the high slot.

Using regex, you can map specific words or phrases to slots. For example, to map a flight code to a room reservation, you would select “flight number” as the slot value. Once you’ve mapped the word/phrase, you can modify the map by selecting the slot name from the Utterance tab. From here, you can edit or delete the slot. You can even map a location slot to mark a location in an utterance.
