In poker, there are lots of decisions to make. One of the most important is whether to play a hand. When making this decision, you need to decide whether your action will produce a positive expectation or a loss in the long run. A good poker hand will have a high expected value over a long period of time, but there is also short-term luck that can make you lose money.
Each player is dealt seven cards, one at a time, and the best hand wins the pot. The cards are dealt clockwise around the table. Each player can either fold or raise his initial bet. In 7-card stud, the best hand is the best five-card hand. The betting phase occurs between newly-dealt cards.

Many variations of poker followed, including stud poker and community card poker. It is widely believed that poker has its roots in Europe, but the origins of the game remain a matter of debate.
