Slots and Renderers

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content to be filled (a passive slot) or calls out for it (an active slot). The content dictated by a slot is supplied by a scenario using the Add Items to Slot action, or via a targeter (content repository). Slots and renderers work together to deliver dynamic content to a page; slots supply the content and renderers specify its presentation.

Slot machines are games of chance that allow players to win a credit based on the odds that a specific symbol appears on a payline. Many slot machines also have “wild” symbols, which can substitute for other symbols on the reels to increase a player’s chances of completing a winning line. In addition, some slot machines have scatter symbols that can trigger special features, such as bonus levels or free spins.

Since their invention in the nineteenth century, slot machines have become an important part of the casino industry. They are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with different game mechanics and payouts. The popularity of slot machines has led to increased regulation of their operation, both by government and private entities. In the United States, these regulations have generally focused on limiting or prohibiting their sale and operation except in private social clubs. In addition, morality and the clergy have often opposed their use. In an attempt to counteract this, some casinos have skewed their probabilities and odds of winning to offset perceived house advantages.
