The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players place money into a pot before being dealt cards. The highest hand wins the pot. Players voluntarily place money into the pot for a variety of reasons, most often because they believe that the bet will have positive expected value for them. In addition, players sometimes bluff other players for various strategic reasons. While the outcome of any particular hand of poker depends on chance, the long-run expectations of each player are based on their actions chosen on the basis of probability, psychology, and game theory.

After each player antes an amount (which varies by game, our games are typically nickels), they are then dealt 2 cards face down. Then, there is a round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. Players can choose to fold, check (not put any money into the pot), raise (betted higher than the last player’s bet), or call (match the previous player’s bet).

Then, 3 more community cards are dealt face up on the flop. There is another round of betting, again starting with the player to the left of the Dealer. After the flop, 1 more card is dealt on the turn, and another round of betting occurs. The player with the best 5-card poker hand wins the pot. Players can also choose to discard their current cards and draw new ones to replace them. These discards and replacement cards are then shuffled into the draw stack.
